What is eco-friendly lighting?
Before the recent ban on incandescent bulbs, most people had never considered lighting as a sustainable option. The ban brought to light the huge burden that these familiar bulbs are putting on the planet's resources and everyone's energy bills. We also realized that there are already options for sustainable lighting (more about that later).
Sustainable lighting is any product or design of lighting that prioritizes a lower environmental impact. This could include using eco-friendly manufacturing processes, designing lighting that uses less energy or including natural daylight as part of the overall illumination.
Eco-Friendly lighting has many benefits
The benefits of eco-friendly lights are similar to the benefits that come with switching to LEDs. Switch to LED lighting and enjoy the benefits. Click here for details.
Energy Efficient
Inefficiency was the main reason for the ban on incandescent bulbs. The bulbs produced more heat than light, consuming a great deal of energy while not producing the same amount of brightness.
The efficiency of sustainable light bulbs and fixtures is much higher. They convert less energy into brighter light. This increased energy efficiency results in lower utility bills, and less stress on electricity producers.
Cost-Effective
The price of light bulbs is likely to have increased. When you look at the big picture, you'll see that they are very cost-effective. LEDs, for example, last far longer than incandescents. We're talking about years rather than months. This means you can save money because you don't need to replace them as often. Because they use less energy, your electricity bill will be lower. Eco-Friendly and Human-Friendly
Sustainable lighting solutions can improve our health and happiness. Lighting is linked to health in several ways. Light that simulates daylight can improve sleep and mental focus. Eco-friendly lighting products are those that eliminate blue light spikes, allow customization (such as flicker-free dimming or light color temperature selection), and do away with toxic substances such as mercury. This makes them also human-friendly!
Sustainable Lighting Solutions
What types of lighting is sustainable? We'll look at four alternatives to incandescents that are more environmentally friendly.
Solar-Powered Lights
Solar-powered lights are a brilliant eco-friendly idea. Solar-powered lights are not without their limitations.
- Geographical Locations - Areas with a high cloud cover will not benefit from solar powered lights to their full potential, and may only get 30% of the intended operating time.
- Placement - These lights are only suitable for outdoor use in areas that are not shaded by architectural or landscape features.
- Replacements: Some solar-powered lamps are designed for disposal when the bulb or solar cell burns out. There is no option to replace them. This disposability negates their eco-friendliness.
Solar-powered outdoor lighting is not the only option for eco-friendly lighting.
LED Lighting
The A-team in sustainable lighting is made up of light-emitting devices. LED lights are not only bright and emit little heat, but their lifespan is impressive - they can last up to 20+ years! Many LEDs can be used in fixtures that previously housed incandescent lights. Those with selectability provide multiple moods from one bulb. You can switch between warm light, neutral light and vibrant daylight, without changing the bulbs.
CFL Bulbs
Compact fluorescent bulbs are the curly lights that began appearing in stores during the 1990s. These lamps were a vast improvement over incandescents, as they consumed a third less energy and lasted longer, while emitting more light. They have their own problems, such as:
- Ballasts can fail
- Limited dimming capabilities
- Warm-up time is too long
- Ultraviolet light emission
- Mercury content
These two factors prevent CFLs being considered a truly environmentally friendly lighting option.
Dimmable lights
Dimmability enhances the everyday experience of a room! Dimming lights can reduce energy consumption, making them more eco-friendly. Dimmers can also be used to set the mood, whether it's for a romantic meal or movie night. TCP offers a variety of dimmable led lights. This eco-friendly benefit is added to all the great reasons why LEDs are a good choice!
